Time with the ball in play is a field and not a number written into the page, because it swings widely between leagues and between matches. If the match report gives you the figure, use that one; the whole calculation turns on it.

Possession as it is broadcast is a share of the time the ball was in play, not a share of the clock. That single distinction is what the first result below is about.

The three times above do not add up to the length of the match, and that is the point rather than a rounding error. The largest single block of a football match usually belongs to nobody: with the ball in play for about fifty-five minutes of ninety-six, the time it spends out of play beats what either side holds it for.

The passing rate is worked out per minute of possession and not per minute of match, which is the difference between measuring tempo and measuring nothing much. Dividing by the full ninety mixes in the time a team did not even have the ball, and flattens the gap between a side that moves it quickly and one that does not.

None of this says who played better. It says how the time was divided and how fast each side moved the ball while it had it, which are the two things the possession figure on its own is regularly taken to mean and does not.

Does sixty percent possession mean sixty percent of the match?

No. Possession is a share of the time the ball was in play, and the ball is in play for far less than the match lasts. With fifty-five minutes of play in a match of ninety-six, sixty percent possession is thirty-three minutes, which is about thirty-four percent of the clock that ran.

So the side that dominated held the ball for roughly a third of the match. That is not a criticism of the statistic, it is what the statistic has always meant.

Why do the times not add up to the length of the match?

Because the biggest block of a football match belongs to nobody. Throw-ins, free kicks, substitutions, injuries and celebrations all run the clock without the ball being in play.

In the example above that comes to forty-one minutes out of play, against thirty-three for one side and twenty-two for the other. The dead time is larger than either team's possession, which is why the three figures cannot sum to the match.

Is possession the same as playing quickly?

No, and this page separates them on purpose. Tempo here is passes per minute of possession, so it asks how fast a side moved the ball while it actually had it.

Two teams with the same possession can have very different tempo, and a side with less of the ball can move it faster. Dividing passes by the ninety minutes of the match instead would mix in the time a team did not have the ball at all, and flatten exactly the difference you were trying to see.

Why is the time in play a field instead of a fixed number?
